چکیده

A numerical method to approximate partial differential equations on meshes that do not conform to the domain boundaries is introduced. The proposed method is conceptually simple and free of userdefined parameters. Starting with a conforming finite element mesh, the key ingredient is to switch those elements intersected by the Dirichlet boundary to a discontinuous-Galerkin approximation and impose the Dirichlet boundary conditions strongly. By virtue of relaxing the continuity constraint at those elements, boundary locking is avoided and optimal-order convergence is achieved. This is shown through numerical experiments in reaction-diffusion problems. Copyright c © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Optimal convergence of a discontinuous-Galerkin-based immersed boundary method

We prove the optimal convergence of a discontinous-Galerkin-based immersed boundary method introduced earlier [Lew and Buscaglia, 2008]. By switching to a discontinuous Galerkin discretization near the boundary, this method overcomes the suboptimal convergence rate that may arise in immersed boundary methods when strongly imposing essential boundary conditions. We consider a model Poisson’s pro...

Higher-order Immersed Discontinuous Galerkin Methods

We propose new discontinuous finite element methods that can be applied to one-dimensional elliptic problems with discontinuous coefficients. These methods are based on a class of higher degree immersed finite element spaces and can be used with a mesh independent of the location of coefficient discontinuity. Numerical experiments are presented to show that these methods can achieve optimal con...

Immersed Finite Element Methods for Elliptic Interface Problems with Non-homogeneous Jump Conditions

Abstract. This paper is to develop immersed finite element (IFE) functions for solving second order elliptic boundary value problems with discontinuous coefficients and non-homogeneous jump conditions. These IFE functions can be formed on meshes independent of interface. Numerical examples demonstrate that these IFE functions have the usual approximation capability expected from polynomials emp...

An optimal order interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin discretization of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations

In this article we propose a new symmetric version of the interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin finite element method for the numerical approximation of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Here, particular emphasis is devoted to the construction of an optimal numerical method for the evaluation of certain target functionals of practical interest, such as the lift and drag coefficients o...

Characteristic Boundary Conditions for the Numerical Solution of Euler Equations by the Discontinuous Galerkin Methods

We present artificial boundary conditions for the numerical simulation of nonlinear Euler equations with the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) finite element method. The construction of the proposed boundary conditions is based on characteristic analysis which follows the Euler equations and are applied for boundaries with arbitrary shape and orientation. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the pr...
